I have had a lifelong relationship with music. As a child, I remember sitting on the piano next to my father. I could listen to him play all day long. One day, he found me dabbling away at Yesterday, by the Beatles. He sat next to me on that bench and gave me just enough guidance for me to figure the rest out on my own.

Shortly after I went through a couple of piano instructors. They were very pleasant and knowledgeable; however, they just didn’t get me. As a 9 year old, I was not very interested in the circle of fifths, much less sol-fa. I found myself losing that passion and interest that first sat me down on that bench. It wasn’t until a few months later that I found someone who understood me. All he did was ask “Manolito, what is your favorite song? Would you like to learn how to play it?” It was game over.

I met with my teacher once a week for an hour. I couldn’t wait to show him how much I grew from our previous lesson. Week after week, my confidence grew. I kept asking for bigger challenges, more complex songs, different rhythms, and different genres. Not only did my piano playing improve, but I discovered  “what if”?

My first “What if?” came to me accidentally. I already knew all these chords and had an ear for music. So I tried singing along with the chords and songs I already knew. Shortly after, I found myself singing and recording my covers on a cassette, yes, I said cassette!

My second “What if?” Came to me out of practicality. I had been gigging across South Florida for a while. Carrying a full-size keyboard in 950% humidity on a hot summer day isn’t fun. I said to myself “what if I learn how to play the guitar”? I used the same approach I had worked on over the years and applied its principles.

My third “What if?” Came to me later on when I asked myself “What if I learn how to record my own music?” Which led me to SAE Miami (School of Audio Engineering). There, I learned the fundamentals of recording, producing, arranging, and mixing.

All of these “What if's” opened a lot of doors for me. From producing an Album for Julio Iglesias Jr. to winning an EMMY award, touring all over the globe, having a #1 song on the radio, being a Latin Grammy nominated songwriter, and so on.
